To renew a Green Card, you will need to pay a $455 filing fee for the Form I-90 and an $85 biometric service fee, resulting in a total of $540. However, there are special situations when you would not have to pay these fees. These include:
- You never received an issued Green Card.
- You received a Green Card with incorrect information because of a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) error.
- The Green Card expires after a child’s 16th birthday and the child is at least 14 years old.
For the first two cases, you’ll need to submit additional documents. View the “Special Instructions” section of the Form I-90 for more information. For the last bullet point, the $85 biometrics services fee is still required, but the other $455 fee is not. Aside from these cases, you will be required to pay the $540 fee or have it waived.
How to Pay the Form I-90 filing fee
In the United States, you may pay these two fees to USCIS using a check or money order drawn from a U.S. financial institution and payable in U.S. funds. You can also pay online, however, you cannot pay these fees by credit card. Additionally, you must pay both fees when you file the Form I-90. The form will be rejected if USCIS receives the form without the correct biometrics and filing fees.
How the Waive the Fees
If you are unable to pay the fees, you may request to waiver them by filing the Form I-912. When filing Form I-912, you will provide documentation showing that you qualify based on one of the following criteria:
- You, your spouse, or the head of household living with you, are currently receiving a means-tested benefit (Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, SSI).
- Your household income is at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
- You are currently experiencing financial hardship that prevents you from paying the filing fee, including unexpected medical bills or emergencies.
Note: If you are waiving the fee, you are not eligible to submit Form I-90 online. You must mail in a paper document.
