Filing Form I-485 costs $985. The biometrics services fee required for all applicants between the ages of 14 and 78 costs an additional $85.
There is a reduced fee for children who are 13 or younger when filing with at least one parent. The fee is $635 in this situation.
If you are applying as a refugee under section 209(a) of the INA, there is no fee to file Form I-485.
No matter the amount of your fee, you must pay by check or money order and follow the following criteria:
- The money must come from a bank or other financial institution in the United States and be payable in U.S. currency; and
- The check or money order must be made payable to: U.S. Department of Homeland Security. You may not abbreviate the name.
If you pay by check, you will not receive the original check back. USCIS will keep a copy of the check on file and destroy the original copy after converting your payment into an electronic funds transfer (EFT). An EFT means that your account information from the check will be used to debit the money from your account, usually within 24 hours.
Please note that if you file Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization and/or Form I-131, Application for Travel Document, without a fee if you submit them with Form I-485.
